Recently one of our main buildings at Haley Street has suffered unsalvageable damage due to arson. This building honorably named "Martell Hall" housed our Life Enhancement program. The program has 15 participants and 5 staff. The building recently had a brand new snoezelen room that participant Peter Eyking funded $10,000 of his own money for. We were about to debut the new room on Facebook and in the newspaper. All of the donated items that had been collected for our big auction fundraiser have been destroyed. The building and everything in it may have to be demolished. Many of the participants in this department have mobility issues or use wheelchairs, many use non traditional forms of communication meaning they don’t speak using words. This was a department that spent the day doing art therapy, enjoying music, baking, learning valuable daily living skills and making it a priority to be as independent as possible in their daily activities. They hosted a coffee house here weekly for the entire Centre where everyone would get together and sit in comfy chairs to chat or listen to music and share snacks that were made together. It was a home away from home, and a place to feel proud to come to each day. For the people that used this building it is their work, they receive a pay every week for the contributions they make to the Centre and daily operations. For many people, change in environment and routine can be devastating, anxiety inducing, and can set someone back years when it comes to progress. This is not just another act of vandalism or senseless destruction, this building meant the world to the people that used it... this is life changing.
